Wellbeing over profit

Meaningful fashion

Carma explores how circular fashion can contribute to human development to become “meaningful fashion”. “Meaningful” means placing people first and ensuring they can live lives of dignity and opportunity.

Currently, the global fashion system adopts a conventional economic growth model that only focuses on growth. The evidence suggests that economies and societies based on growth and consumption do not lead to increased levels of human happiness or wellbeing. Rather than focusing on economic growth alone, we need to reorient our way of life towards human and ecological wellbeing.

Circular fashion’s momentum and transformative potential present a unique opportunity to redesign the global fashion system. However, the circular economy, along with many of the current sustainability initiatives in the fashion industry, is based on a green-growth approach that still puts economic opportunity before social and environmental concerns.

A wellbeing economy approach focuses on reducing energy and resource use so that economic activity becomes more aligned with environmental health and human well-being. A just, equitable, and inclusive future will only be possible if we prioritise people’s wellbeing over profit. Failure to design in positive social outcomes to the circular fashion economy risks perpetuating—and even worsening—social concerns that have plagued the industry. Women, informal workers and marginalised groups, including migrants and ethnic and racial minorities, are most at risk.

Holistically inclusive

To enable the creation of meaningful fashion, we aim to holistically integrate circular and social-economic frameworks using web3 technologies so that all actions, policies, and efforts are geared towards attaining human prosperity while meeting the needs of all people within the limits of our planet.

A meaningful fashion industry will provide a space where everyone can have a voice and feel accepted. It ensures that no one falls short on life’s essentials while ensuring that collectively we do not overshoot our pressure on Earth’s life-supporting systems, on which we fundamentally depend.

A new ecosystem

Where fashion, technology & human wellbeing intersect

We’re building a digital ecosystem for collaborative community-owned, inclusive, distributive, open and circular fashion design and production. Using an interoperable web3 protocol that operates on a framework for human well-being, we will enable stakeholders to internalise and optimise social value when creating physical and digital fashion products.

Our platform gives anyone the power to design, sell, fund & produce IRL and URL meaningful fashion regardless of their knowledge, background, gender, identity or socioeconomic status.
